Hearing Loss

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities in the United States, with recent statistics indicating that approximately 28 million people in the country have some level of hearing loss (Bat-Chava et al., 33). When hearing loss occurs in older adults, it is frequently accompanied by the loss of other sensory capacities as well; therefore, older adults must often deal with both decreased hearing and decreased vision simultaneously (Bat-Chava et al., 33). Loss of sensory function can result in communication difficulties, poor psychosocial functioning, and decreased socialization (Heine & Browning, 113).

In a study on the psychosocial development of deaf students, ôfour different models were estimated via multiple regression,ö and it was found that social adjustment, self-image, emotional adjustment, and overall adjustment are affected by the inability to hear, and that in each of these categories there are specific factors that can affect the specific type of adjustment (Polat, 327). For example, the use of a hearing aid can positively affect not only the overall adjustment of hearing-impaired students but also their self-image, emotional adjustment, and social adjustment as well (Polat, 328-331). The presence of other handicaps, age at hearing loss, age of child, degree of speech intelligibility, and other related factors can also have a positive or negative effect on psychosocial functioning (Polat, 328-331).
