THE FOUR FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT AT GENERAL MOTORSThere are generally four primary functions associated with management: planning, leading, organizing and controlling. While all managers perform these functions, the techniques they use and the ways in which they incorporate these functions into their jobs can differ significantly depending on the organization, the manager's role within that organization, the expectations of the manager, his subordinates and his supervisor, and many other factors. This research considers these functions as they are applied at General Motors by a facilities maintenance general supervisor. This position is responsible for identifying problems at various plants that cause a loss in production time. Rather than working at a single site, the manager travels from plant to plant as problems arise, and works with the staffs at those plants to isolate and take remedial action to fix the problem.
