The desire to hear God's voice in meditation is a gift of grace--for which the individual must pray. But once the grace to meditate is received, the individual works out the best way to achieve the inward silence necessary for the successful practice of meditation. A particular time, place, even posture, may be most conducive to meditation--but these vary with the individual. The forms it takes include: the meditation on passages of Scripture, "recollection"--in which the person surrenders the events of the day to God and may receive answers; meditation on the created order; and, meditation on current events and the attempt to discern their significance in the Creator's scheme. Meditation is progressive and, when practiced successfully, eventually becomes a way of life in which the individual is constantly learning and receiving guidance.
