Sega Enterprises is a company that has made its mark in the video game industry, moving to a dominant position with Nintendo. The company has accomplished this through strong research and development and equally strong marketing efforts. Sega was one of the first companies to use advertising to build a brand image for its games, and it has successfully challenged the industry leader.

This industry is, however, characterized by rapid change and technological innovation, and Sega has proven successful at meeting and anticipating both of these factors. It supplements its video games with arcades featuring its own products, and then sells home versions of these products to the consumer market. In addition, the company has opened theme parks built around its entertainment products, and has even entered into agreements with competitors for opening attractions at other theme parks.

The company has a high level of debt which it is seeking to reduce, and it recognizes that the future may require venturing into areas such as the CD-ROM market, which may bring about the end of proprietary hardware for the entertainment game market. Sega is willing to do this in part because it is a company willing to take more risks than its competitors,

This tie-in enhances the demand that the company would normally see as a result of its business operations, and builds brand loyalty among consumers. The quality that goes into the Sega games is also a primary strength. Strong research and development efforts must be given the credit for this. Through careful development of a hedgehog character, the company was able to successfully challenge Nintendo's apparently impregnable position in the industry.
