REVIEW OF ARTICLE ON B. F. SKINNER

This paper presents a one-page review of the following article:

Rutherford, A. (2003). B.F. Skinner and the auditory inkblot: The rise and fall of the verbal summator as a projective technique. Historical Psychology, 6(4), 352-378.

In this article, Rutherford (2003) discusses the contribution of B. F. Skinner to the field of projective assessment, hardly a field that most would expect to find a man who is often termed ôThe Father of Behavioral Psychology.ö In particular, Rutherford focuses on SkinnerÆs development of what he called ôthe verbal summatorö focusing not only on Skinner as its originator but on the development and the eventual end of the verbal summator as an auditory projective method.

It is noted in the article that Skinner described the verbal summator as useful in terms of evoking latent verbal behavior, and was interested in using it to study psychotic behavior. Skinner was also said to have briefly alluded to the idea that the verbal summator could be used as a projective technique.

Rutherford (2003) goes on to note that while SkinnerÆs attention to this area shifted, other researchers used his basic verbal summator as a model for the development of several other projective tests. These included the tautophone test, the auditory apperception test, and the Azzageddi test, among others.
