The amount of data available to most organizations in the contemporary environment is both immense and increasing. This outcome is a result of technology becoming more powerful and cheaper to use. Powerful microprocessors, inexpensive data storage devices, and increasing amounts of bandwidth available to transmit data fuel the increase in data volume. The usefulness of the data to strategic managers, however, depends in large part on to ability of managers to access the data in a timely manner and in an acceptable format (one that facilitates its use in issue/problem analysis and decision-making). Secondly, however, managers require analysis tools as well as timely access to usable data.

Technological innovations based in electronics hold the potential to change dramatically the ways in which organizations function. Organizational managers, thus, must be prepared to anticipate such changes and devise strategies to manage such changes effectively, as opposed to waiting around to react to changes when they occur.
