Remote Altering System for Burglary

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Burglary is one of the most common crimes committed in the United Kingdom, but it can be one of the most difficult to prosecute. Burglars are rarely seen by others due to the nature of the crime itself, and intercepting burglars during the commission of the crime can be difficult. Security devices have been created to help thwart burglars--these range from double cylinder locks to highly sophisticated monitored burglar alarms that verify the alarm status before police are dispatched--but the effectiveness of these devices varies significantly with how difficult they are to use and how often the residents actually employ them. In addition, such devices can be costly.

A new system is proposed that uses a camera, motion sensing device, laptop computer, mobile phone and the Web to provide residents with the ability to remotely monitor their own premises. When this system is invoked, it continually monitors an entry point--or more than one entry point--and sends a text message to a mobile phone when an intruder is detected. The user then goes to the Web and logs onto a secure site where an image of the intruder can be viewed. If the intruder is deemed to be unauthorized, the user then notifies the police with the relevant information. This avoids false alarms, and provides the police with much more information than just "intruder detected." In the event that the police do not apprehend the criminal in the act, the image can be save

The Nokia phone card is discussed later in this research, but it can be noted that this is a highly reliable PCMCIA card that is GSM-compatible and that meets the reliability and dependability requirements of this system. Web access is required in order for the images to be uploaded to the Web, but nearly any Web provider can be used for this function. Again, reliability is a key consideration here. Delayed dial-up times, or a tendency to drop Web calls, for example, will severely compromise the system. Many individuals already have Web access in their homes, and assuming that they are satisfied with the access provided by their Internet service, that service could more than likely be used for this function, as well. The system also requires that the user have access to a mobile phone that can receive text messages. Again, the brand of mobile phone is not as important as its ability to function reliably and within a wide service area. The geographic range within which the system will work is dependent on the mobile phone service provider. At the very least, the mobile phone service should allow the system to work within the United Kingdom. Wider coverage, such as pan-European coverage, is commonly av
