The theme or key idea for this article was the examination of the long-term effects of multisystemic therapy (MST) compared to individual therapy (IT) for prevention of criminal and violent behavior.

The problem studied was violence among youths, which is a national health care issue with extreme fiscal and social costs. Mental health professionals and policy makers have promoted many childhood programs to prevent violence in youths and the results of programs, such as the multisystemic treatment program, need to be determined for long-term effects.

As an overview of the study, the Safe Date program was evaluated for its effect on prevention of dating violence. Specifically the effects of the Safe Date program related to psychological and sexual abuse and violence against a current partner were investigated, along with effects of the program on mediating variables related to norms and perceptions regarding dating violence. Subjects for the study were obtained from 14 public middle schools. A questionnaire was designed to measure victimization, perpetration, and mediating variables. Findings showed the program to be successful, with less psychological abuse, sexual violence, and violence perpetrated against a current partner. These findings were unique since no prior research had been conducted regarding this program.
