This paper reviews critical issues affecting learning environments in non-traditional academic formats, learning theories relevant to teaching in non-traditional formats, and the application of traditional approaches to teaching in non-traditional formats. The need for continuing education has led to the use of the non-traditional academic format. To ensure the maintenance of high levels of current knowledge such as advances in nursing practice and medical technology, nurses and other practitioners must participate in ongoing education. The disadvantages of traditional learning present critical issues that have led to the use of non-traditional formats. Computer-based learning is one approach to eliminating the need to have an instructor in front of a classroom full of students. The World Wide Web has become another important tool in expanding computer-based education technology. Computer-based education uses the power of computers to standardize and to overcome many of the problems that are inherent in ILE (Short, 2000). As computers become more sophisticated and programming techniques become easier, computers increasingly supplement ILE but have not replace it altogether. Short reported that as computers continue to increase in sophistication and as processor times and storage devices become faster and less expensive, respectively, there is an ôincreasing tendency to combine video-based education and computerbased educationö (p. 60).
