Alternative Models of Higher Education
This is an excerpt from the paper...
This paper reviews the development of higher education and assesses alternative models of higher education, comparing paradigms of higher education in the United Kingdom and the United States with those in Central America. Additionally, contemporary international adult education in relation to the andragogy model of education is considered. Models of higher education in the United Kingdom and the United States followed divergent paths through the 1950s; later however, Britain moved closer to the American egalitarian model. In Central America universities pushed mass enrollments before a recent trend toward educational quality. At the international level, digital distance education, consistent with the andragogy model, appears to hold the potential to transform higher education. Egalitarian models of higher education improve access to higher education but sacrificed quality and other models remain behind the times. Discuss a historical perspective of higher education with regard to the American and English paradigms. In addition, present a discussion comparing Central American Education to United States and British models of education. Discuss whether international adult education fits the model of andragogy? Critically analyze the pros and cons regarding different models of education. Checkoway (2001) reported that presently, universities worldwide are under pressure since higher education has become an expense many students cannot afford, while at the same time students feel that they must have a college degree. Thus, alternative models of higher education that rely on the delivery of education in non-traditional venues with more targeted curricula and lower costs are developing rapidly (Checkoway, 2001). The following section presents a discussion of international distance education, an example of an alternative form of education that relies on the andragogical model.
International Education and Andragogy
Advances in technology are leading to an internationalization of higher education in the form of distance education (Schrage, 2001). Schrage reported that digital distance education appears to be a ôviable model for international higher educationö (p. 41). Schools such as the University of Phoenix
