Developing policies to reduce the recidivism rate among persons illegally entering the United States from Mexico a. The target population for a survey to collect data to investigate the topic will be those persons aged 16 or older apprehended either while attempting to enter the United States illegally or subsequent to their illegal entry into this country.
b. The type of survey proposed for this population is a survey administered in an in-person process.
The dependent variable in this study will be as follows: Probability that respondent would again attempt to enter the United States from Mexico illegally if apprehension mandated (a) a two-year prison term served in the United States and (b) a permanent prohibition to future lawful residency in the United States.
Hypothesis 1: A mandatory two-year prison sentence upon apprehension while attempting illegal entry into the United States or subsequent to such illegal entry will lead to a reduction in the recidivism rate among persons engaging in this activity.
Hypothesis 2: A permanent prohibition to future lawful residency in the United States upon apprehension while attempting illegal entry into the United States or subsequent to such illegal entry will lead to a reduction in the recidivism rate among persons engaging in this activity.PART 2
