Leadership in Nursing Theory

The central theory of leadership in nursing which informs my own personal philosophy is known as relational leadership, developed by Marilyn Klakovich, who theorized that leadership is a process-oriented set of activities (Sullivan & Decker, 2004). This theory of leadership calls for empowering others, an emphasis on ethics, a value driven approach to purposeful activities and inclusion of all and their points of view. Klakovich (in Sullivan & Decker, 2004) considers relational leadership as a model or perspective that focuses on the idea that leadership effectiveness has to do with the ability of a leader to create positive relationships within the organization.

In nursing, relations between professionals and their patients are based on the concept of care (Willmer, 2007). Nursing leaders are those who see themselves as role models and mentors who want to empower others to become effective participants in a continuum in which high quality patient care is delivered. Nurse leaders often function as clinical instructors working with student nurses and emphasize networking and communication across disciplines (Nicholl & Tracey, 2007). From my perspective, the relational nurse leader is one who understands that his or her role is to facilitate the development of others - which includes patients as well as other professionals.

Such a leader may be a staff nurse, a charge nurse, a head nurse, or a nurse educator. He or she may be an administrator rather than a direct provider of care. In the context of clinical supervision as noted by Sirola-Karvinen and Hyrkas (2006), the nurse who is a relational leader will recognize the imperatives involved in ensuring that each new generation of nurses understands not only the technical requirements of their role, but the ethical, moral, and spiritual aspects of the role as well.
