's (2005) view that Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a source of information about what specific interests or needs will motivate individuals is useful when one recognizes that people are likely to have overlapping needs at any given time. While a particular work role may be satisfying with respect to its capacity to provide an adequate standard of living, the individual may be driven to achieve a better standard of living and therefore be motivated by financial rewards. Others may be more motivated by esteem needs and the desire for self-actualization. Understanding that needs are likely to be manifested differently in individuals is there key to using this paradigm for developing motivational programs.
