teenagers become pregnant every day and approximately 4 in 10 young women in this country will become pregnant at least once before they become 20 years-old. In fact, the United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any developed country. Interestingly, Van Lenten (2007) states that 75 percent of all pregnant teenagers have mothers who also had teen pregnancies. This suggests that acculturation may be a factor in placing some girls at greater risk for a teenage pregnancy.

One problem with premarital sex is that is often leads to unwanted early pregnancies. Wellings, et al (2005) collected sexual behavior data from 59 countries and found that the data show substantial diversity in sexual behavior by region and sex while also showing that when early sexual behavior is common, so is early pregnancy and maternity for unwed mothers.
