or numerous industries. Another difference is that "JCAHO does not issue monetary fines" but OSHA may (JCAHO, 2005, p. 1). A significant number of OSHA inspections are unannounced, while the JCAHO rarely performs an unannounced inspection. As noted previously, JCAHO "covers patients, visitors, and staff only. OSHA covers employee safety only" (JCAHO, 2005, p. 1). Both organizations also require training, but OSHA only requires employee training while JCAHO training is limited to staff.
Despite the numerous differences, there are some similarities between the two entities, such as JCAHO following OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard. In addition, as one healthcare administrator notes, "Meeting OSHA standards helps meet their goals of JCAHO EC standards" (JCAHO, 2005, p. 1). To meet the standards of both organizations, there must be support at all levels of the organization and appropriate allocation of staff and funding. Both sets of standards can also be administered by the same trained employees. OSHA and JCAHO do compliment each other to a certain degree.
