Recycling Opinion Piece: What It Is and Why You Should Want To Do It

What is recycling and why should the readers of "Ladies Home Journal" want to do it? The fact is that most of the items we all use everyday - items like aluminum, glass, paper, and containers - are made of materials that can be used over and over again. Recycling involves the separation of materials that can be used again from regular garbage (Lund, 2000).

For example, a person who recycles their household materials would collect his or her recyclable materials and would place them into a special container the city provides. When the container is full, it would be picked up by a special garbage truck that collects only recycled material.

So if your family drinks a lot of soda from aluminum cans and you gather these up and put them in a special recycling container, the aluminum can be recycled again and again and used repeatedly. This means that this material need never sit in local landfills as an unnecessary pollutant. In other words, recycling saves resources and makes for less trash in landfills and incinerators. That's good for the environment.

Now you may think, "Well it sounds good, but I am only one person and I hardly think that my recycling efforts are going to have much of an effect on anything." This may be a logical thought, but just how true is it? You are reading this opinion piece in "Ladies Home Journal" magazine. Do you know that there are 15 million people reading "Ladies Home Journal" every single month (Editor, 2007)? Now, if only 1 million of the 15 million monthly readers of this magazine decided that part of maintaining their home in good order was making sure to separate their recyclable materials from their regular garbage and put these into the recycling bin, think of what a tremendous difference that would make to the environment!
