Plastic Surgery and Asian Women
This is an excerpt from the paper...
The culture of most Asian civilizations, including that of China, has been described by Sodaro (2004) as collectivist, oriented toward certainty, respectful of authority, and resistant to the influence of external values, norms, and constructs. This particular view of Asian culture in general and Chinese culture in particular suggests that resistance to aesthetic influences emerging from non-Oriental societies would be strong. However, in recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the use of various plastic surgery procedures among Asian women in pursuit of a more "Caucasian" or "Western" appearance (Kobrin, 2004). The purpose of this research report is to discuss and analyze the phenomena of plastic surgery by Asian women in the larger context of transformations occurring in Asian culture. Guterl, Hastings, Muzumdar, Schafer, Lee, and Kolesnikov-Jessop (2003) reported that one of the most noticeable cultural transformations occurring in Asia in recent years is the growing popularity of new standards of what constitutes female beauty. The traditional Asian concept of beauty is diverse. Indians, for example, have traditionally valued fuller figured women. The Chinese attribute women's beauty to heart-shaped faces with high cheekbones and delicate bodies. For many years, Asian women wanted pale, fair skin, a small and pouty mouth, a straight nose, very shiny black long hair, and an oval, melon-seed-shaped face (Guterl, et al, 2003).
