Artificial Climate Repairs

The information indicates that clouds have a net cooling effect on the earth. Therefore, an approach that humans could use to reverse global warming is to spur cloud formation. This would provide cloud cover, cooling the earth and negating the effect of global warming.

The approach that humans could use to spur cloud formation is to release the chemical dimethyl sulphide, or DMS, into the atmosphere. Research from the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia indicates that DMS forms naturally in the reef's coral and releases into the atmosphere, forming clouds (New Scientist, 2005). By artificially releasing DMS into the atmosphere, the same effect could be obtained. This approach would reverse global warming by tempering its heat with a cooling effect, causing the warmer temperatures to drop back down to normal. This approach would alter incoming radiation by preventing it from reaching the earth. Croke et al. (1999) found that as temperatures rise, cloud cover increases, so this mechanism would add to the effectiveness of the cloud formation approach.

On the other hand, creation of clouds would also affect outgoing radiation, as it would contain the radiation somewhat. Thus, there could be some increased heat as a result of the contained radiation, but as the amount of radiation that reaches the earth grows increasingly lower due to the cloud cover, the amount of trapped radiation would also be lower. The overall effect would be to reduce global warming by lowering the temperature.
