Being a Teacher - Personal Statement

There are two primary reasons that I want to be a teacher working in a high-needs New York City school. First, I started out by being a passionate student, and I want to convey my passion for learning to my students. I loved school, and I deeply enjoyed learning new and challenging things, and that is a love that can be shared and exchanged to fuel the love for learning among my students. Second, I believe that learning is the catalyst to achievement and success, and from success students gain not only a better life but a new world view. Students that have achieved can recognize that there is a place for them in the world and that they have much to offer and much to gain. In the high-needs New York schools, this recognition in itself can be life-changing.

In my own experience, I have accomplished some things I am proud of that can help me ensure high academic achievement for all of my students. One such experience was a paper I was assigned to write on how to build a community using social capital. The research and writing of this paper taught me new concepts about how community operates together to accomplish goals. I saw that in much the same way, a classroom is a community that can leverage social capital, as well, and by promoting the service of students to the class and to each other, I would be preparing them to succeed in their future community life as well as in their education. In my classroom, an understanding of social capital will enable me to promote better citizenship and collaboration, as well as hard work, which in turn will make every student a skilled ambassador and an individual that can attain high academic achievement through the synergy of working with his classmates.
