Forrest "Little Tree" Carter: Teaching Aspects of Life

In the fictional memoirs of Forrest "Little Tree" Carter, Granpa plays the role of mentor and protector, teaching Little Tree numerous aspects of life. Ever since Little Tree's parents died, Granpa has served as the protector or Little Tree. After the funeral when folks raise a "mortal fuss" over Granpa and Granma raising Little Tree, Granpa has the final words and comes to Little Tree's aid, "'Leave him be,' he had said. And so they left me be. Grandpa seldom spoke in a crowd, but when he did, Granma said, folks listened" (Carter 2). Granma teaches both Granpa and Little Tree to read, but Granpa teaches him Indian ways of the land, like how to listen to the forest and how to anticipate the reactions of animals. Granpa runs a still during prohibition. He also teaches Little Tree how to farm, make whiskey, and adapt to mountain life. As Little Tree is exposed to visitors to the hollow, from the law to city slickers, Granpa offers Little Tree advice. In this sense, the tall old man that is Scottish-Cherokee helps to socialize Little Tree. Granpa offers many pieces of wisdom and advice for living, like "A man rises of his own will in the morning" (Carter 6). In this sense Granpa serves to guide the education and development of Little Tree as they interact in various adventures in the woods or with visitors.
