Government and Big Business

In the wake of the global economy and the spread of capitalism around the world, a new government ideology and policy related to big business has evolved. Touting free enterprise in the name of capitalism, legislators often support legislation that favors business, especially big business. As Baldwin (2009) notes, the increasing connection between government and big business is not "capitalism" but "Corporatism" or "the marriage of Big Business with Big Government (p. 1). Recent government involvement in major economic bailouts of finance, banking and auto-making institutions shows this increased connection. Under a banner of global economies, big governments often help create major monopolies to compete globally, but Baldwin (2009) notes such policies "strangle competition and freedom" that are values that are associated with capitalism and free markets (p. 1). Because of the enormous sums of revenue involved, the corporatism will continue to increase in the future. Not satisfied with banking and financial institutions or the agriculture and auto industries, Baldwin (2009) notes energy, healthcare and the food business are "now in Corporatism's crosshairs" (p. 2). It appears the increasing relationship between big business and big government is threatening to undermine democracy and replace it with totalitarianism, at least economically.
