Europe's Industrial Revolution: Analysis of Positive and Negative Developments

The European Industrial Revolution transformed European society both in positive as well as negative ways. There was almost no activity in daily life that was left unaffected by the Industrial Revolution. Positive benefits like improved methods of transportation conflict like negative outcomes of the Industrial Revolution, like substantial abuse of workers who worked in unsafe conditions for long hours with little pay. This analysis will demonstrate that though the Industrial Revolution left virtually no aspect of life unchanged in its wake, this change involved both positive and negative developments.

There is little denying that the Industrial Revolution was responsible for many innovations and advances that significantly benefited individuals in a positive manner. Increased income and a higher standard of living definitely resulted from the Industrial Revolution. Arnold Toynbee maintains the impact of advances in the use of machinery increased wages, "At first, machinery raised the wages of spinners and weavers owning to the great prosperity if brought to the trade" (Doc 2). From cheaper goods to high demand for labor, positive outcomes accrued to society from the emergence of the Industrial Revolution.

There is also little denying that the advances and positive gains of the Industrial Revolution were accompanied by negative developments. Workers began to be exploited in unsafe conditions, working long hours for barely subsistence pay. Even Toynbee's positive account of the early impact of the Industrial Revolution on wages confronts this issue, "At a later date, the condition of the workman was very different" (Doc 2). With the development of cities arose slums where working-class workers were mired in squalor and unsanitary conditions.
