The Ucs, Cs, and Pcs formulation is meant to be scientific in its uncovering of pathological mental and emotional processes and to "eliminate [in a patient] the critical spirit in which he is ordinarily in the habit of viewing such thoughts as come to the surface" (Freud 1978, p. 13). Secondly, the whole idea of differentiated states of consciousness, together with the idea of manifest content as metaphor and symbolism, means that Dreams does not intend to make moral attributions to concept of infantile wish-fulfillment. The Ucs, in this view, does not diminish the moral stature of the Cs subject but instead is a powerful mechanism for explaining core (Ucs) psychology. The decoding process, which involves therapeutic suggestion and interpretation, is the locus of dream work.
