During later middle childhood the child has been out in the world for awhile and has become more independent. However, parents and family remain a strong influence. Peer pressure is strong and parents are needed to help children develop healthy friendships. When a child has more self esteem and confidence he or she is able to resist peer pressure. This child is also able to take responsibility for make positive choices. Children in later middle childhood may face physical changes due to puberty onset and they must deal with the challenge of going to middle school (CDC, 2010).
