considered the process useful. He examined each phrase used in the dream account for clues, trying to discover what the conscious mind might have left out. In his approach, this was an exhaustive process but one that was well worth the effort. Freud (1931) contends, "It would be wrong to assume that . . . a connection between the dream-content and reality would be easily obvious from a comparison between the two. On the contrary, the connection must be carefully sought, and in quite a number of cases it may for a long while elude discovery" (p. 141).

Each of Freud's cases begins with an explanation of the context in which the dream occurred. He then quotes the dream, as it was told to him in as much detail as the patient was able to present it. This account is followed by an analysis of every word or phrase used, as the observer attempts to understand the hidden meanings of the dream and the issues with which the dream attempts to deal. This paper follows that model.
