I would like to share the concerns addressed in the article with other teachers using or considering using the whole language approach; this because I think it will better prepare them to face the challenges involved in using this instructional strategy.

In this article, Burk and Melton-Pages (1991) discuss the various roles of the whole language teacher. In this regard, the authors delineate and discuss both the general philosophy of the whole language approach and the more concrete steps teachers can take to implement the approach.

The need for administrative support is also addressed as are the pressures and challenges faced by educators electing to adopt this reform. The article concludes by relating the whole language approach to teachers' decisions to choose what is the best instruction for their students or choosing to allow others to make this decision.
