Juvenile Delinquents & Interpersonal Relations

nt (Glueck & Glueck, 1968; Freedman & Savastona, 1970).

However, the instability of parents can manifest itself in several different forms, only one of which is alcoholism (Deutsch, 1982). In other words not all juvenile delinquents have parents who are alcoholics; this fact is interesting in that the current literature has shown qualitative differences between the characteristics of adolescents from homes where parents are alcoholics and children from homes where parents are not alcoholics (Ackerman, 1978; Bennett, Wolin & Reiss, 1988).

Differences in the characteristics of adolescents who are and are not children of alcoholics leads to the question of whether there are differences in the characteristics of juvenile delinquents who are children of alcoholics and juvenile delinquents who are not children of alcoholics? The proposed study was designed to examine this question.

Knopf (1984) states that of the many factors that have been established as associated with juvenile delinquency (e.g. broken homes, parent-absence, poor parental discipline), the most important is the affective quality of the parent-child relationship. Even as early as 1970, Gibbons declared:

Scientific candor compels us to conclude that the link between parental rejection and aggressive conduct is one of the more firmly established generalizations concerning delinquency. (p.202)

With respect to the foregoing, Hetherington and Martin (1979) stated that one of the main reasons for poor quality of child-parent relationships in homes that produce delinquents is the emotional instability of parents. Specifically, the parents of juvenile delinquents are often psychotic, or neurotic, or substance abusive (drugs or alcohol) due to emotional instability. This instability and related factors then cause parents to behave in an inconsistent, neglectful, and rejecting manner with their children.
