Political Parties

In looking at the three Web Sites of the primary political parties (Democrat, Republican, Reform), we learn a great deal about partisan politics in America. The Web Site Homepages of the Democrats and Republicans resemble battle zones against dreaded enemies more than they do informative avenues of issue exploration. The top three links on the Republican National Committee’s Homepage consist of two attacks on democrats and one for attending a meeting of the Republican state chairmen. One attack on the Democrats is entitled “Gore’s Risky Tax Policies” while the other one is headlined with “Senate Democrats Kill Marriage Tax Relief” (RNC 1). The Democratic National Committee Homepage is not much better than this. It has five links to the “Latest News” down the center of the page. It should come as no surprise that three of the five articles are undermining the Republicans: “Bush as Tax-Cut-and-Spend Republican”; “What You Won’t Hear at George W. Bush’s Meeting with Log Cabin Republicans”; and, “Bush’s Health Commissioner Insults Latinos” (DNC 1). In other words, both of these sites spend a majority of their Homepage space attacking the other dominant party in American politics. Ironically, the one party who labels itself the Reform Party does not do this on its web site Homepage. While there are links to news releases and opinion pieces, the Reform Party’s Homepage is designed to inform us about the issues, ideology and actions of the Reform Party. The four main headings to other links are entitled:
