During its second year of operation, I decided to close my small but robust venture. The unexpected and sharp devaluation of the Brazilian Real against the US Dollar hindered imports while enhancing exports. While I was disappointed, this experience showed me the realities of conducting business – especially the significant impact of environmental factors. I learned that theory and practice do not always mesh in real business situations, and that business shocks occur with little warning or preparation. I was determined to develop flexibility, anticipation of the unknown, and precise strategies that would prevent such outcomes in the future. Today I lead a very lucrative export business in Brazil because of the lessons I learned in my first business experience.
Please indicate your intended field of specialization and briefly outline your academic plans at Columbia College.
International trade is my field of specialization. I direct my own company while I attend school. At Columbia University my priority will be to further pursue specialization in the skills and subjects that will enhance my career. Familiarizing myself with the intricacies and dynamics of international politics is a secondary priority for my studies at Columbia. I am confident the combined impact of these two educational priorities will greatly improve my leadership of my company in Brazil.
What are your current postgraduate/career plans?
