m the Sublime to the Surreal, a performance art show that exhibits 20 musical word-paintings inspired by artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, and da Vinci (Loewith 7). Each song written by O’Reilly is accompanied with visual images from a noted painter which inspired O’Reilly to write the tune.

As singer Smith reveals “When you hear these songs and look at those paintings, the images don’t just illustrate the music-they’re in juxtaposition to it. We are musically reflecting art” (Loewith 7). In this particular performance artwork, we can see that is shares more than similarities with painting because it actually enhances and deepens the appreciation of the artworks that are exhibited during the performance. It at least, if nothing else, more interactively shares an interpretation of the paintings with other people than can be had from merely discussing the works.

Painting and performance are share much more in common. They are both a means of self-expression. They both offer an opportunity to make social and political statements. Both arts allow for the artist to present a personal interpretation of his internal or external world. They are also both a means of sharing entertainment with others. So, too, both painting and performance art offer the potentiality to act as a repository of the culture, era, and worldview in which they are created and exhibited. Performance art often will not endure as long as paintings, but modern analog and digital methods of capturing performance art give it a much longer cultural life than ever before possible. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has recently shifted its perspective away from more traditional art forms in favor of performance art “The NEA has preferred video and performance art to painting and sculpture, which supposedly are suffering historical exhaustion and reinforce hierarchies of the past” (Will 68).
