The book was co-authored by Nathan Myhrvold and Peter Rinearson, Because of Gates' notariety, the book was number 1 on the New York Times' bestseller list for seven weeks. Published in 20 countries, the book sold more than 400,000 copies in China alone. In 1996, while redeploying Microsoft around the Internet, Gates rewrote and rethought the book to reflect his growing involvement with interactive networking as a major milestone in human history.

In that book, Gates' constantly emphasizes that organizing is the first step in turning a strategy into a reality. Organizing has the goal of maximizing the results of the product life cycles, and businesses use several systems for achieving this. Primary models are:(1) Decentralization (in which there is a flattening or elimination of organization charts and putting decision-making responsibility and authority at multiple locations); Dispersal (which decentralizes management responsibility as well as physically relocating people); Work teams (groups of pros --designers, engineers, IT professionals, and so on -- that are assigned task-related projects and goals).
