However, Reagan thrived under this system. He had no background in film and only slight training in drama, so he welcomed a system where all he had to do was follow directions. This reliance on the guidance of co-workers, whose job it was to make the stars shine, carried over into Reagan's political career and helps to explain his remarkable passivity and the broad delegation of authority that many Washington observers noted.

Although Reagan campaigned as a man dedicated to family values and high moral standards, he was the first divorced man to be elected president. By the time he entered politics he was happily married to Nancy and his divorce from Jane Wyman in 1948 was a dimly remembered episode from his Hollywood past. However, the break-up of his first marriage had created quite a stir. Reagan's relationship with his children from his first marriage, and his and Nancy's relationship with their two children were less than ideal. All four of the children were involved with the counter culture of the 1960s--espousing views and moral codes a great deal more liberal than Ronald and Nancy's. Reagan was often estranged from his children from both marriages because of this; Nancy was often at odds with her son and daughter.
