Exegesis of 1 Samuel 2:27-36.

essages from God were rare (3:1), and to people later in Israel's history when they went 400 years without a prophetic voice as they awaited the Messiah. John the Baptist's call to "Prepare ye the way of the Lord" summarizes the meaning of when God is silent.

The unnamed prophet's announcement, "And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind; and I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed for ever" (1 Sam. 2:35, RSV) has been variously interpreted.
