had built (p. 112).

Welch identifies four initiatives (goals) that provided the overarching vision for his 20 years as CEO: globalization, services, six sigma and e-business (p. 392). For GE, globalization meant more than just selling its products in the international market. The company actively sought partners, acquisitions and employees around the world. Although it initially staffed overseas offices with foreign service employees (American employees who relocated to the destination country), the company emphasized hiring and training foreign nationals not only to work in the business, but to run it, as well. This provided the company with much-needed insight into local customs and opportunities, and also provided career paths for outstanding employees. At the same time, it greatly reduced the company's payroll since extra benefits (such as housing and transportation allowances) would not be paid (p. 315).

The services initiative meant that businesses that traditionally focused on products, such as power plants, shifted their focus to services when the product market turned soft. Services gained momentum throughout the company and GE realized significant benefit as a result. Six sigma was a quality initiative that demanded fewer than 3.4 defects per million articles; training in six sigma is now required for any manager expecting to move up in the organization. The e-business initiative is discussed at length the high technology portion of this research, but is represented by GE's late yet successful entrance to the world of e-commerce (p. 392).

GE's tactics (objective) contrast with its initiatives in that the tactics are short-term rather than long-term. The company reduced its internal travel costs by using the Internet more and hiring more foreign nationals. These are tactics that support initiatives and they are tactics that have short-term benefits through cost reduction (p. 392).
