itions. As a result, they are usually sullen when in the presence of government official, or men such as myself, who deal extensively with the government. I fear that they have lost any spirit which they may have acquired when our country was unified.

In my dealings with the local officials from the Northern provinces and the officials of the national government, I have come to realize that the Southern provinces have not kept pace with the Northern provinces. Industrialists have favored the North over the South. While shops have been established in the northern towns and cities, we have seen nothing permanent down here. Our people remain tied to the land, as they have been for centuries. The major banks have virtually refused to promote industry in our part of the country. Instead, they favor the North, which also enjoys access to the major foreign banks. We seem to be regarded as a backwater, populated by country cousins unsophisticated in the ways of the modern world. Ironically, so long as we are regarded in such a fashion, we will conform to this stereotype. How can we advance ourselves if we are refused the tools of advancement? If the elites of industry and government continue to treat us in such a manner, it can only be a matter of time before we fall under the sway of Sicilian customs, subject to the peasant tyranny of mafia.

Forgive me if I dwell too long on the geographic inequities of our country. I simply feel that we in the South are being left to decay in our poverty by the national government and the industrialists. The only real hope for the peasants of Calabria may well be to find some way to America, where they will be given the chance to show that they do have the talents to live in the modern industrial world.
