Battles Fought by Alexander the Great

city-states, AlexanderÆs campaigns and his aims soon took on a much more ambitious flavor.

Alexander set out to fight Persia and its king, Darius III. Richard A. Gabriel and Donald W. Boose Jr. observe that AlexanderÆs plan for conquering the Persians could be divided into five phases: (1) secure his support at home in order to prevent revolution and maintain his resources, (2) invade Ionia to provide a starting place and opportunities to maneuver further, (3) neutralize the powerful Persian navy, (4) find, battle, and destroy the Persian army, and (5) consolidate Greece and Persian cultures into a single entity (227).

AlexanderÆs campaign was tested in a number of major battles, four of which are key to his success and to his reputation as a great military strategist. Ferrill summarizes these four important battles:
