ility. The concept is being applied here loosely because, although in its application to instruction it must be strict, in its application to education it must be flexible. Indeed, instruction is a closed system and therefore wholly verifiable, whereas education is an open system and therefore more difficult to evaluate. It is postulated herein that learning a foreign language is an educational experience containing instructional events.

The choice of the systems approach has also been influenced by the pragmatic orientation criterion of "emphasis on consequences or results" (Page & Thomas, 1977, p. 269) of the instructional component of the educational program.

Where the term instructional program or program or program of study has been used, it is equivalent to the term curriculum as usually used in American educational circles today. Both program and curriculum have come to mean the systematic organization of learning activities aiming at imparting knowledge, attitudes, and/or skills (Dieuzeide, 1983, p. 344).

With regards to a research project on, say, the validity of methods and techniques in The Natural Approach, I have suggested a classic research methodology which lacks the tighter strictures of the systems approach, because The Natural Approach is an educational rather than instructional approach and therefore does not lend itself to the rigid discipline of the systems approach.

Fundamental to an instructional system is the following sequence: INPUT ( THRUPUT ( OUTPUT, where the INPUT represents the entry behaviors, i.e. those behaviors contained in the OUTPUT that the learner has acquired, has not acquired, or possesses the capability of acquiring before being subjected to the program. The OUTPUT represents the desired behaviors (terminal or exit behaviors), i.e. those behaviors which can be reasonably expected to have been acquired at the conclusion of the curriculum (i.e. of the system implementation).
