Therapists Implanting False Memories

ted that two criteria must be met for false memory syndrome to appear. First, the patient must have a high rate of suggestibility and second, the therapist must engage in some way elicit the recall from the patient by suggesting to him or her that there is repression going on. If this theory is valid, then it might be expected that people with a high rate of susceptibility to suggestion (people with high scores on hypnotic induction scales) might be more likely to believe a false suggestion about repressing past therapist if told by a therapist they were doing so, than would people with low susceptibility to suggestion (people with low scores on a hypnotic induction measure). Moreover, in her work in the area, Loftus (1996) indicates that while both genders can come to believe false memories, there is a tendency for women to be more prone to the syndrome than men.

Unfortunately, the existing research on false memory is far from complete. However, the research cited above can be used to generate two research hypotheses. These are:

Research Hypothesis 1 - False suggestions about repressing past memories that are made to subjects by somebody they believe to be a therapist will be more likely to be believed by subjects with high scores on a hypnotic induction scale than by subjects with low scores on a hypnotic induction scale.

Research Hypothesis 2 - Females will be more likely to believe the false memories than will males.

Chapter II: Review of the Literature

Loftus (1995, 1998) defines false-memory syndrome as a state of mind where the sufferer has a high number of highly vivid false memories, often of abusive events during their childhood. Although not recognized in the DSM-IV (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association), the phenomenon of false memory has been widely accepted among psychologists and psychiatrists (Loftus & Polage, 1999).
