research. In recent years, there have been a growing number of organizations which are opposed to this practice. Thus, by the late 1980's, it was reported that "there are some 7,000 animal-protection groups in the United States, with combined memberships of 10 million and total budgets of some $50 million" (Cowley, 1988, p. 51). Some of these groups, such as the Animal Liberation Front, use violent tactics in their protests. However, for the most part, the opponents of animal research use peaceful means in expressing their views.

In addition to medical research, many consumers have begun to protest the use of animal testing in the cosmetics industry (Bunny love, 1991, p. 74). There have also been protests against the killing of animals for the fur industry, the inhumane treatment of farm animals, and the use of animal models for educational purposes. The most outspoken demonstrations, however, have been against the atrocities which have been reported in scientific and medical research. For example, there have been reports of cruel experiments which test the endurance of baby monkeys by keeping them in isolation chambers or by poking them with spikes when they try to hug surrogate mothers (Cowley, 1988, pp. 53-54).
