Analysis of An Argument

The presenting issue is prevention of employee theft. Security practices of ten companies were analyzed and each requires their employees to wear photo identification badges while at work. Since over the past six years there were no incidents of employee theft reported for these ten companies, it is concluded that this was due to the wearing of the photo identification badges. Therefore it was recommended that these badges be used to prevent employee theft.

While it may appear that conclusions were a product of logical analysis of the problem, many important factors were ignored, thus the argument is not well reasoned. While a superficial view of the line of reasoning makes it appear to be logical, supporting evidence is lacking. When evaluating a problem, there must be a thorough understanding and analysis of the issue. For this situation, each of the ten companies had no reports of employee theft for a six-year period. The first factor to consider is whether this represents actual employee theft or merely reported employee theft. The second factor considered is the fact that employees wear identification badges at each of the companies. While these badges may be related to lack of employee theft, they may not be related to this tendency and there may be additional factors that actually contribute to a lack of theft. A thorough investigation would need to consider multiple variables typically related to employee theft and compare each for the ten companies. The third factor is the recommendation to all clients that these identification badges be worn for the prevention of employee theft. The conclusion is not supported, since the evidence is incomplete. Given the limited facts presented, it is not logical to assume that wearing identification badges is related to lack of employee theft or that this factor would be related to future lack of employee theft.
