This background story is significant to the characterizations of both Hippolyta and Theseus, as they are not included in the main action of the play, and thus do not have the chance to experience the fantastic events that take place in the forest. We are unable to see them grapple with loveÆs struggles and difficulties in this context, so their roots in Greek mythology help the audience to understand how Hippolyta and Theseus relate to playÆs main themes, just as Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, and Helena.
