The Tempest

ctions of Prospero, we see the binary conflicts that are the stuff of deconstruction analysis. Western or English values, beliefs, and customs are considered dominant over those of indigenous people like Caliban, who are portrayed through language as somehow ôinferiorö to the ôsuperiorö values of Prospero and his daughter. In other words, we see a conflict in the text of meaning and the construction of binary valuations due to culture. Caliban is considered ôuncivilizedö compared to the ôcivilizedö nature of Prospero and Miranda. Prospero and Miranda are viewed as ôgoodö while Caliban is viewed as ôevil,ö and Caliban is portrayed as ôcrudeö in comparison to the ôculturedö nature of Prospero and Miranda. However, these English values that serve to create a reality through language that serves to oppress Caliban are viewed as ôsuperiorö or ôdominantö merely because they are what Prospero and Miranda are used to from English culture and customs, not because they are û as Prospero treats them û absolute truths. It only takes a quick reading of ProsperoÆs explanation of trying to instill culture (i.e. Western or English culture) in Caliban to see how language is used to create this conflicting reality of value and meaning. Took pains to make thee speak, taught thee each hour One thing or other: when thou didst not,

Know thine own meaning, but wouldst gabble like

A thing most brutish (Shakespeare 5).
