Henry Purcell forged a unique English style of Baroque music, though he incorporated many stylistic elements of French and Italian composition. As one music historian notes, ôPurcell himself united the dramatic verve of French tragedie en musique with the melodic brilliance of Italian opera seriaö (Henry, p. 1). Purcell focused on sacred music and music related to the theater over the course of his career. His opera Dido and Aeneas is genuine opera, using only recitative and not a word of spoken dialogue from its start to its end. This opera features the spontaneous melody that was associated with PurcellÆs particularly English brand of Baroque music. He composed in both the polyphonic style and also the lighter, more rhythmical style associated with French music of the era.
