Unique Style of Drama of Chekov

icult to admit that their present life is bad and dreary, thereby being unable to affect change over building a better life. In one story, ôThe Lady With The Pet Dog,ö we are treated to two characters who can affect such change. AnnaÆs ability to resist authority and DmitryÆs ability to reject his old life and attitudes due to his love for Anna causes a change in both of them. As the narrator notes, ôThis love of theirs had altered them both,ö (Chekhov, p. 269). Often in life individuals become bogged down or trapped by the expectations of others. In order to follow the rules and values of society, we often forgo a measure of our own happiness and fulfillment on the personal level. Dmitry and Anna have lived such lives. Dmitry becomes upset when Anna feels like their lovemaking, which he finds beautiful, is something sinful. Unless they can admit the unhappiness and lack of fulfillment in their lives, Dmitry knows they will sacrifice their own happiness for others. As Dmitry expressed, ôàeverything is really beautiful in the world when one reflects: everything except what we think or do ourselves when we forget the higher aims of life and our own human dignity,ö (Chekhov, p. 263).

In other of ChekhovÆs short stories, we see that love, fulfillment, and happiness are often sacrificed for social expectations or expectations of family and friends. More often than not, when characters do come to the recognition that their life is ôsadö and ôdreary,ö it is too late for them to effect change. In The Kiss, a momentary encounter with real love makes Ryabovich recognize that his life is sad and dreary but it is too late for him to find happiness, ôàhe remember again how Fate in the person of an unknown woman had by chance caressed him, he recalled his summer dreams and fancies, and his life struck him as extraordinarily meager, poverty-stricken, and drab,ö (Greene, p. 43).
