Web Based Materials

#1 As pointed out in the statement on the WebAim page, there

are still certain restrictions of access to web-based material for people with certain disabilities (WebAim, 2005). However, trying to accommodate for every possible type of disability that may occur seems an impossible task for anyone designing material for the web. Certain factors can be taken into consideration, such as providing audio feed, large size print, easily navigable pages, and providing text for graphics, but the expense incurred for many of these things would be prohibitive for the people maintaining those websites. If everything on the web had to be produced in such a way as to accommodate every possible type of disability, the amount of information on the web would be greatly reduced and its usefulness thereby curtailed.

#2 The Americans with Disabilities Act forbids discrimination

of any kind in any program receiving federal funding, and this was later extended beyond federally funded programs (Section 504, 2005). This means that any educational courses on the web must be available to all students regardless of any disability, which may not be true for all course and all disabilities. Section 508 provides the first-ever standards for accessibility for the internet, and needs to be taken into account when designing web sites (Section 508, 2005). Businesses must comply with Section 508 when supplying Electronic and Information technology goods and services to the federal government, and state governments may be held accountable for complying with Section 508 because of the money they receive under the Assistive Technology Act of 1998.
