Comparison of Economics and Politics

The efficacy of the government's intervention in the economy, however, will be directly affected by the efficiency and accuracy of the country's political system. Heilbroner and Thurow, Teresa Amott in Caught in the Crisis, and William Greider in Who Will Tell the People would all agree that America's political system from the late 1970s through the early 1990s was actively involved in the running of the economy and did a poor job of correcting inequities in the system. All the authors agree that the political climate during that period favored the richest households and the biggest businesses. However, Greider would likely go further to argue that regardless of whatever administration is in power, the corrupted nature of America's democracy would result in largely skewed and ineffective corrections to the system. More than likely, Greider would argue that America's political system would first need to be revised to actually reflect its democratic ideals before it could intervene in the economy in an impartial and truly helpful manner.
