Though the local gambler does not believe Fields, he sees a chance to keep control by making Fields sheriff.

Both West and Fields had a certain archaic quality that often found them in period pieces or pieces with old-fashioned vices and virtues. West liked to dress in frilly outfits reminiscent of a western dance hall, and here such clothing fits because the story is set in the West. Fields had the air of a riverboat con man and also dressed in keeping with that image, and again this Western fits his persona perfectly.
