For example, when describing the brutal punishment received from Mr. Corey, who "tore off my clothes, and lashed me till he had worn out his swatches, cutting me so savagely as to leave the marks visible for a long time after." Douglass sharply concludes "this whipping was the first of a number just like it, and for similar offences" (1908). After this "matter-of-fact" conclusion, Douglass begins the next paragraph, "I lived with Mr. Covey one year" (1908). Without any transitional sentence, he shifts from a painful description to a factual statement that in no way addresses the previous experience.
