The socialist stage was indeterminate, and current communist societies such as China and the former Soviet Union could be viewed as contemporary versions of the transitional phase between capitalism and the Marxist vision of communism (Marger, 1987, pp. 31-38).

Marx's theory contains incongruities and contradictions. Separate histories in different parts of the world have evolved with no clearly marked and uniform stages of development. Extensive revisions have been made, as well as a critical reassessment of the fundamental concepts of the theory, because of these inconsistencies (Bottomore, 1993, p. 59).

Theda Skocpol and Ellen Kay Trimberger presented a structural analysis of revolutions based on the work of Karl Marx. They examined the multiple relationships among the important political players and the key relationships that may reinforce or undermine state power. Their findings indicated that the very structure of certain states and societies caused revolution (Goldstone, 1994, p. 64.).
