These include the Chihpen Hot Springs resort, located near the southeastern city of Taitung, a mountain resort at Sun-Moon Lake, and a resort at the beach at Kenting in the south of the country. Similar to resorts in other parts of the world, the goal of these properties is to provide a western-style resort experience, with all amenities combined with the scenic wonder of the local area (Sinclair, October 19, 1992, p. 213).
In order to help accommodate these new developments, the government is supporting the efforts of private industry by making improvements to the country's infrastructure. For example, a new (second) north-south highway is under construction, as is a high-speed railroad from Taipei to Kaohsiung. Mass rapid transit systems are being put into place in five of the nation's largest cities, and a second terminal building is being added to the Chiang Kai-Shek Airport. These improvements are expected to be completed by 1997 (Sinclair, October 19, 1992, p. 212).
